In 2016 I left my job working for the Gila River Indian Community as a GIS Technician and moved back to Indiana to care for my aunt who had dementia. The quickest job available to me was at a local Walmart in northcentral Indiana. Working full time meant help was needed. Companions, home health care, doctor appointments, hair appointments and more all needed to be coordinated with my work schedule. My sister helped, but she lived 3 hours away in Indianapolis. Our story is typical.
These needs (and more) sent me on the path to develop LevelUp Meds. Purdue Ft. Wayne's Computer Science program has assisted with development of the current webapp. For 4 consecutive years students enrolled in the senior Capstone class have been developing a web-based application to help caregivers organize, coordinate and communicate needs associated with caregiving.
This past year (2025) I have experienced firsthand the need to be cared for. In Sept. 2020 while I was walking with neighbors, a truck veered onto the sidewalk, and I was struck. This resulted in metal plate between C3 -C4. (The third and fourth cervical vertebrae.) In July of 2024 I was rearended resulting in further damage to the neck. I now have a different metal plate between C4 - C5 as well as rods and pins to relieve pressure and prevent further injury to the spinal column. (Surgery was in January 2025) Words cannot express how grateful I am that one of my sons was able to stay with me for 6 weeks to help me through recovery. While I have a 1 - 2-year recovery, I am very fortunate the injuries were not much worse.
In the United States there are 53 million unpaid caregivers who care for their ill and/or aging loved ones. Life is complicated. Adding in caregiving takes complicated to a whole new level. The goal of LevelUp Meds is to reduce a part of that complication. Multiple caregivers taking care of multiple care recipients makes communication, organization and coordination imperative.
